Opelenie is the process by which pollen is transferred from the male reproductive structures to the female ones in seed plants, enabling sexual reproduction. In flowering plants (angiosperms), pollination leads to fertilization and seed development, often via a pollen tube that delivers sperm cells to the ovule. In gymnosperms, pollen reaches ovules in exposed seeds, and fertilization occurs without the same double-fertilization mechanism observed in many angiosperms.

Mechanism and biology: Pollen grains are produced in anthers and dispersed by various vectors. When a compatible stigma is reached, pollen germinates and forms a pollen tube that grows through the style toward the ovule. In angiosperms, fertilization typically involves one sperm fusing with the egg to form a zygote and a second sperm fusing with polar nuclei to form the endosperm, a process known as double fertilization. Successful pollination results in seed formation and, in flowering plants, fruit in many species.

Types and vectors: Pollination can be biotic (involving living agents) or abiotic (non-living, such as wind or water).
