Ontologji, or ontology, is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of being and existence. It explores questions such as what kinds of things exist, what it means for something to exist, and how entities are categorized and related. Ontology seeks to identify the most general features of reality and to provide a systematic account of the basic kinds of things that can be said to exist, such as objects, properties, relations, and events.

It has a long history, tracing to ancient Greece with Aristotle's categories, through medieval scholastic debates about universals, to modern discussions of realism and anti-realism. Key topics include the problem of universals, mereology (parts and wholes), persistence through change, causation, space and time, and the status of abstract entities.

In contemporary philosophy, ontology is often contrasted with epistemology. Some traditions treat ontology as a theory of what there is, while others emphasize how we can know or justify those claims. Different schools argue about whether universals exist independently or are dependent on minds or linguistic practices.

Outside philosophy, ontology has become central in information science and artificial intelligence. Here an ontology is a formal representation of knowledge as a set of concepts within a domain and the relationships among them. Ontologies enable semantic interoperability, data integration, and automated reasoning. Common examples include medical ontologies (for diseases and procedures) and domain-specific ontologies used in engineering or finance, often encoded in languages such as OWL or RDF.

Critics warn that ontologies can be subjective constructions, especially in applied domains where definitions change with context. Proponents respond that well-structured ontologies improve communication, analysis, and software interoperability across systems and disciplines.
