ontluchters

Ontluchters are devices used in closed piping systems to remove trapped air and other gases. By venting air that collects at high points, they help prevent air locks, reduce noise, and maintain efficient flow and heat transfer in heating, cooling, and process installations.

There are two main types: automatische ontluchters (automatic air vents) and handontluchters (manual vents). Automatic vents vent air automatically as it accumulates, typically using a float- or diaphragm-operated valve that opens to release air and closes when liquid reaches the vent, minimizing leakage. Handontluchters require manual operation to release air, and are often used in smaller or temporary installations.

Typical installation points include the highest points in a network, at the end of long runs, near radiators, boilers, or heat exchangers, where air tends to accumulate. In larger systems, multiple vents are installed to purge air quickly during filling or after maintenance. Some installations place vents directly at equipment connections to ensure continuous removal of dissolved gases.

Maintenance involves periodic inspection for blockages, corrosion, or leakage; replacement of worn seals or vent elements; and ensuring that automatic vents are not obstructed by dust or scale. In systems with untreated water or aggressive fluids, more frequent venting and cleaning may be required to maintain performance.
