Etymology and origin of the term are rooted in the Onasteel languages, with the name onasteeltaan commonly interpreted to mean “glimmering wanderer.” The term first appears in 22nd‑century fantasy and science fiction corpora and has since been used in world-building guides to illustrate plausible deep-sea life.
