Områdebaserade refers to approaches, analyses, or interventions that are organized around geographic areas rather than individuals. The term is used in Swedish policy discourse, public health, and urban planning to describe methods that treat a locality, district, municipality, or other defined area as the primary unit of analysis or intervention.

Area-based analyses rely on aggregated data for the area and emphasize contextual factors such as neighborhood conditions, local services, and environmental exposures. This stands in contrast to individual-based approaches that focus on person-level characteristics. A key concern with area-based work is the ecological fallacy, where associations observed for areas do not necessarily apply to individuals within those areas. Geography-driven effects, boundary choices, and the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) can influence results.

Applications include public health planning (area-based vaccination campaigns, surveillance by postal codes), social and welfare programs targeting neighborhoods with higher need, urban planning and resource allocation, and community safety initiatives. In practice, area-based strategies may use geographic information systems (GIS) to map needs, services, and outcomes and to coordinate interventions across sectors.

Advantages include potential for efficient targeting, addressing health and social inequities, and facilitating local governance and impact measurement. Limitations include the risk of masking heterogeneity within areas, privacy concerns, potential stigma, and dependence on the quality and comparability of area-level data.
