Oldószerálló is a Hungarian term describing the resistance of a material, coating, or adhesive to organic solvents. In practice it refers to the ability to maintain dimensional stability, mechanical integrity, and surface finish when exposed to liquids such as acetone, toluene, xylene, alcohols, or other solvents. This property is important for applications in chemical processing, instrumentation, coatings, and packaging where solvents are present.

The level of solvent resistance depends on several factors. The chemical nature of the constituent material, crosslink density in polymers, crystallinity, glass transition temperature, and the presence of fillers or plasticizers strongly influence performance. Exposure conditions—solvent type, temperature, duration, concentration, and any mechanical stress or thermal cycling—also determine outcomes, as some solvents cause swelling, softening, crazing, or dissolution.

Testing and standards for solvent resistance typically involve immersion or contact tests, followed by assessment of weight or thickness changes, swelling, surface defects, or loss of mechanical properties. Common reference methods include industry standards such as ASTM D543 for plastics in contact with liquids and ISO/IEC and related coatings standards. Practically, results are solvent-specific: a material may be resistant to one solvent but not to another, and high temperatures or long exposures can alter performance.

Typical materials with good solvent resistance include fluoropolymers (e.g., PTFE, FEP), certain polyimides, epoxy and polyurethane coatings, and some silicones. However, no material is completely solvent-proof, and compatibility must be confirmed for the intended solvent, exposure time, and service conditions.

Applications span chemical processing equipment, labware, protective coatings, seals and gaskets, adhesives, and electronic or aerospace components where solvent contact is likely.
