Ohutusandmed is the Estonian term for a safety data sheet (SDS), a document that provides essential information about a chemical substance or mixture to support safe handling, storage, transport, and emergency response. The purpose of ohutusandmed is to communicate hazards, proper use, and protective measures to employers, workers, and responders, and to enable risk assessment and informed decision-making in workplaces.

In the European Union, the provision of safety data sheets is required for hazardous substances and mixtures under the REACH and CLP regulations. Estonia adopts these EU-wide requirements through national guidance and regulatory measures. Ohutusandmed should be accessible, up-to-date, and available in the user’s language, commonly Estonian, with translations as needed for international operations.

A typical ohutusandmed follows a standardized structure, commonly arranged into 16 sections. These include identification of the substance or mixture and supplier, hazard identification, composition/information on ingredients, first-aid measures, fire-fighting measures, accidental release measures, handling and storage, exposure controls and personal protection, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological information, ecological information, disposal considerations, transport information, regulatory information, and other information. The content reflects GHS classifications and hazard statements, safety precautions, and guidance for spill response, ventilation, PPE, and emergency procedures.

Ohutusandmed are produced by manufacturers or suppliers and are often provided with the product. They should be kept accessible to workers, updated when new information becomes available, and used alongside labeling and training to support safe use and regulatory compliance.
