Offset printing, also known as offset lithography, is a widely used commercial printing technique. It is a planographic method meaning the printing plate is flat, without any raised or recessed areas. The principle behind offset printing is that oil and water do not mix. An image is transferred from a metal plate to a rubber blanket, and then to the printing surface. This indirect transfer process is what gives offset printing its name.

The process begins with creating a printing plate, typically made of aluminum. The image area on the plate is made receptive to ink, while the non-image area is treated to attract water. When the plate is inked, the ink adheres only to the image areas. Water is then applied to the plate, which is repelled by the ink but adheres to the non-image areas, preventing ink from adhering there. The inked image is then transferred to a rubber blanket cylinder. Finally, the blanket cylinder transfers the image onto the paper or other substrate.

Offset printing offers several advantages, including high image quality, consistency, and durability of the plates, allowing for long print runs. It is suitable for a wide range of paper types and finishes. This method is commonly used for producing books, magazines, brochures, newspapers, and packaging. While it requires a significant initial setup cost, the cost per unit decreases with larger print volumes, making it an economical choice for mass production.
