Oesztrogén, commonly known as estrogen in English, is a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. The primary and most potent estrogen is estradiol. Other important estrogens include estrone and estriol. These hormones are primarily produced by the ovaries, but also by the adrenal glands and adipose tissue.

In females, oesztrogén is responsible for the maturation of eggs in the ovaries, the development of female secondary sex characteristics such as breast development, widening of the hips, and the regulation of the menstrual cycle. It also has significant effects on bone density, cardiovascular health, and mood. During pregnancy, oesztrogén levels rise significantly to support the developing fetus and prepare the body for childbirth.

While primarily associated with females, males also produce small amounts of oesztrogén, which are important for sperm maturation and libido. Oesztrogén levels naturally fluctuate throughout a woman's life, with significant drops occurring at menopause, leading to various physiological changes. Synthetic forms of oesztrogén are used in hormone replacement therapy and in some forms of contraception. Disruptions in oesztrogén levels, whether too high or too low, can lead to various health issues.
