Odontoma is a benign odontogenic tumor, meaning it is a non-cancerous growth originating from tooth-forming tissues. It is considered one of the most common types of odontogenic tumors, particularly in younger individuals. Odontomas are typically discovered incidentally during routine dental radiographic examinations.

There are two main types of odontomas: compound odontoma and complex odontoma. Compound odontomas are characterized by the presence of multiple small, tooth-like structures, often resembling miniature teeth, grouped together. Complex odontomas, in contrast, are characterized by a disorganized mass of dental tissue, lacking distinct tooth formation. Both types are composed of enamel, dentin, and cementum, the same tissues that form normal teeth.

The exact cause of odontoma formation is not fully understood, but it is believed to arise from a disturbance or anomaly in the development of the dental lamina, the embryonic structure responsible for tooth formation. Trauma to a primary tooth or hereditary factors have been suggested as potential contributing causes, though these are not definitively proven.

Odontomas are usually asymptomatic and do not cause pain or swelling. They are typically found in the jawbones, most commonly in the anterior region of the maxilla and mandible. When they grow large, they can sometimes cause delayed eruption of permanent teeth or displacement of adjacent teeth.

The diagnosis of odontoma is made through radiographic imaging, such as dental X-rays or CT scans, which reveal the characteristic appearance of the tumor. Treatment usually involves surgical excision of the odontoma. Since they are benign, they do not metastasize, and complete removal generally leads to a favorable prognosis. Recurrence is rare after complete excision.
