Octocrylene is an organic ultraviolet (UV) filter used in sunscreens and other cosmetic products to absorb ultraviolet radiation from the sun. It is oil-soluble and designed to provide photostable protection against ultraviolet light.

Octocrylene mainly absorbs UVB radiation and offers additional protection in the UVA1 range. It is noted for high photostability, helping to maintain sunscreen performance during sun exposure.

In formulations, octocrylene contributes to texture and water resistance and is often combined with other filters to broaden coverage and improve overall stability, including stabilization of avobenzone.

Regulatory agencies in many regions have approved octocrylene for use in sunscreen formulations at commonly allowed concentrations up to about 10%. The ingredient is considered safe when used as directed, though some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic contact dermatitis. As with other UV filters, systemic absorption can occur, but assessed safety profiles support its use within approved limits.

Environmental and ecological considerations are an area of active study. Like other cosmetic UV filters, octocrylene can enter aquatic environments, and research on effects in marine life continues, with no consensus on broad ecological risk at typical exposure levels.
