Næsevingerne, also known as alar cartilages or nasal wings, are the flexible structures that form the lateral aspects of the external nose. They are composed of hyaline cartilage and are a crucial component of the nasal anatomy, contributing to both the shape and function of the nose.

There are typically two major næsevingerne, the greater alar cartilages, and several smaller minor alar cartilages. The greater alar cartilages are C-shaped and form the bulk of the alar rim, the outer boundary of the nostril. They also contribute to the tip of the nose. The minor alar cartilages are smaller and more variable in number and location, situated posterior to the greater alar cartilages and helping to support the nasal vestibule.

Functionally, the næsevingerne play a significant role in airflow through the nasal passages. Their flexibility allows them to subtly change shape during respiration, influencing the resistance to airflow. In some individuals, particularly during forceful inhalation, the næsevingerne can collapse inward, leading to nasal obstruction. This phenomenon is known as nasal valve collapse.

Surgical procedures, such as rhinoplasty, often involve modification or reconstruction of the næsevingerne to improve nasal aesthetics or to address breathing difficulties.
