Nyrjähdyssprain, often referred to as a sprained wrist, is a common injury involving the stretching or tearing of ligaments in the wrist. Ligaments are tough, fibrous bands of tissue that connect bones to each other, providing stability to the joint. When the wrist is forced into an unnatural position, such as during a fall onto an outstretched hand, these ligaments can be injured.

The severity of a wrist sprain can range from a mild stretch (Grade 1) to a complete tear (Grade 3) of one or more ligaments. Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the wrist. Depending on the severity, there may also be difficulty moving the wrist or a feeling of instability.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination, and medical history. Imaging tests such as X-rays may be used to rule out fractures, while more advanced imaging like an MRI might be necessary to assess the extent of ligament damage in severe cases.

Treatment for wrist sprains generally involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to manage pain and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be helpful. For more severe sprains, immobilization with a splint or cast may be required to allow the ligaments to heal. Physical therapy is often recommended to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion to the wrist and prevent future injuries. In rare instances, surgical intervention might be considered for complete ligament tears or when conservative treatments fail.
