Nutcrackers are hand-operated tools used to crack open hard-shelled nuts, such as walnuts or hazelnuts. The tool consists of two levers joined at a fulcrum, forming a jaw that opens and closes. By squeezing a pair of handles, the user applies force to the nut placed between the jaws, which fractures the shell. Nutcrackers are typically made of metal or wood and vary in size and design.

Beyond tools, the term nutcracker also refers to decorative wooden figurines, especially in Germany. Originating in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region, these figures are usually carved as soldiers, kings, or other characters. They are primarily ornamental and are commonly displayed as part of Christmas decor; while many resemble the working tool, most are nonfunctional and exist for display rather than cracking nuts.

Historically, woodworkers in central Europe developed nutcrackers in the early modern period, with especially robust production in Saxony during the 18th and 19th centuries. The decorative figures became popular in the 19th century, and their fame grew internationally after the 1892 premiere of the ballet The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, inspired by E. T. A. Hoffmann's story. The scenes and characters associated with the ballet have reinforced the festive associations of nutcrackers.

Today, both functional and decorative nutcrackers are produced worldwide. Functional versions emphasize craftsmanship and engineering, while decorative ones are collected for design and cultural meaning, especially around Christmas. Nutcrackers are referenced in popular culture and continue to be a symbol of tradition and seasonal celebration.
