Nostokyvyn is a term used in Finnish engineering that roughly translates to “lifting capacity.” In practice it refers to the maximum load a lifting device—such as a crane, hoist, or winch—can safely raise under defined operating conditions. The concept is commonly described in English as rated capacity or lifting capacity and is expressed in units such as kilograms or tonnes. Nostokyvyn encompasses both the static strength of the structure and the safety margins applied by standards and manufacturers.

The nostokyvyn of a device is determined by multiple factors: the structural integrity of the support framework, the capacity of the drive mechanism, the condition of cables or slings, and the control systems that limit movement. Dynamic factors, including acceleration, deceleration, bending moments, wind loads, and impact during lifting, can reduce usable capacity. Temperature, wear, lubrication, and fatigue also reduce the effective nostokyvyn over time. A safety factor is typically applied to account for uncertainties in use.

Manufacturers publish a rated capacity or working load limit for each lifting attachment or configuration, usually shown on a nameplate. Operators should not exceed this rating and must derate further for conditions that reduce capacity. Regular inspections and load tests are part of maintaining nostokyvyn; any signs of deformation, corrosion, or wear require reevaluation.
