Nonwatertight designs are common in applications where complete water exclusion is unnecessary or impractical. For example, many outdoor furniture pieces, such as patio chairs and tables, are intentionally nonwatertight to reduce weight and cost while still providing functional use in mild weather conditions. Similarly, some electronic devices, like certain outdoor-rated speakers or cameras, may have nonwatertight seals to protect against dust and light rain rather than submersion.

In maritime contexts, nonwatertight compartments are sometimes used in secondary or non-critical areas of a vessel, where flooding would not immediately endanger the ship. However, this practice is generally avoided in primary hull sections or critical systems, as water ingress could compromise structural integrity or operational safety.

The distinction between watertight and nonwatertight is often defined by standards and regulations, particularly in industries like shipbuilding, where classification societies (such as Lloyd’s Register or DNV GL) specify requirements for watertight integrity. Nonwatertight systems may still incorporate drainage mechanisms or seals to mitigate water damage, but they do not meet the rigorous sealing standards of watertight designs.

In everyday language, "nonwatertight" can also describe poorly sealed items, such as a slightly leaking container or a door that does not close completely, leading to water seepage in rainy conditions. Proper maintenance and design adjustments can often improve the watertightness of such systems.
