Nonexudative is an adjective used in medical and scientific contexts to describe a process, lesion, or condition that does not produce exudate—the fluid, proteins, and cells that accumulate when vessels leak during inflammation or injury. The term is often used to contrast with exudative conditions, where leakage is present.

Originating from the Latin exsudare meaning “to exude,” with the prefix non- indicating absence, nonexudative describes forms of disease or tissue response without notable exudation.

In medicine, nonexudative describes situations in which there is no exudation. For example, nonexudative age-related macular degeneration refers to the dry form of AMD, characterized by retinal atrophy and drusen without leakage from abnormal vessels. In contrast, exudative (wet) AMD involves choroidal neovascularization that leaks fluid or blood and typically requires different management.

Other uses apply to inflammatory processes described as nonexudative, meaning they do not generate the pus or protein-rich fluid associated with exudative inflammation. The distinction between nonexudative and exudative patterns can influence diagnostic considerations and treatment decisions, including monitoring strategies versus targeted therapies.
