Nominaaliryhmätekniikka, often translated as nominal group technique (NGT), is a structured brainstorming and decision-making process used by groups to generate ideas and prioritize them. It is designed to ensure that all participants have an equal opportunity to contribute and that the group's final decision is representative of its members' opinions. The technique involves several distinct phases.

The process begins with an individual brainstorming session where each participant silently generates ideas related to a specific problem or question. Following this, group members share their ideas one by one, with a facilitator recording each idea on a visible surface without discussion or criticism. Once all ideas are listed, the group engages in a structured discussion to clarify each idea, combining similar suggestions and eliminating irrelevant ones.

The next phase involves individual voting or ranking of the ideas. Participants privately score or rank the ideas based on their perceived importance or feasibility. These individual rankings are then collected and tallied to determine the group's overall priorities. The idea or ideas with the highest combined scores are typically considered the group's preferred solutions. NGT is particularly useful in situations where there is a risk of dominance by certain individuals or where group dynamics might otherwise hinder open participation. It promotes a more democratic and systematic approach to group problem-solving.
