Nitrogénanyagcsere refers to the biochemical processes involved in the transformation and cycling of nitrogen within living organisms and their environment. Nitrogen is a fundamental element for life, forming a critical component of amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, and other essential biomolecules. The nitrogen cycle in living systems is a complex series of reactions that convert nitrogen from one form to another.

In organisms, nitrogénanyagcsere begins with the assimilation of inorganic nitrogen compounds, primarily ammonia (NH3) or nitrate (NO3-), from the environment. This assimilation is often facilitated by enzymes like glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase, which incorporate ammonia into organic molecules. Plants, algae, and some bacteria are capable of assimilating inorganic nitrogen. Animals, on the other hand, obtain their nitrogen by consuming organic matter, such as plants or other animals.

The breakdown of nitrogen-containing organic molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, occurs through catabolic pathways. This process, known as ammonification, releases ammonia. Ammonia can then be re-assimilated or further transformed by microorganisms in the environment. Denitrification, carried out by certain bacteria under anaerobic conditions, converts nitrates back into nitrogen gas (N2), which is then released into the atmosphere, completing a part of the global nitrogen cycle. Conversely, nitrogen fixation, also performed by specific microorganisms, converts atmospheric nitrogen gas into ammonia, making it available for biological use. These interconnected processes are vital for maintaining the availability of nitrogen for all living organisms.
