Nitrogénanyagcsere refers to the biological processes involved in the uptake, utilization, and excretion of nitrogen by living organisms. Nitrogen is a fundamental element for life, forming the building blocks of proteins, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), and other essential biomolecules. Organisms obtain nitrogen from their environment, primarily in the form of inorganic compounds like ammonia, nitrate, or nitrite, or organic compounds such as amino acids.

Within an organism, nitrogen is incorporated into these vital organic molecules through assimilation. This process is crucial for growth, repair, and reproduction. When these biomolecules are broken down, either during normal metabolic activity or cellular turnover, nitrogen is released. This released nitrogen can be reutilized by the organism or excreted as waste products. The primary nitrogenous waste product in many animals is urea, which is less toxic than ammonia. Birds and reptiles, however, excrete nitrogen mainly as uric acid, a semi-solid compound.

The nitrogen cycle, a biogeochemical process, describes the transformation of nitrogen and nitrogen-containing compounds in nature. This cycle involves various microbial processes, including nitrogen fixation (conversion of atmospheric nitrogen gas into usable forms), nitrification (oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate), denitrification (conversion of nitrate back to nitrogen gas), and ammonification (decomposition of organic nitrogen into ammonia). These processes ensure that nitrogen is available to living organisms and continually recycled within ecosystems. Disruptions to the nitrogen cycle, often caused by human activities like agriculture and industrial pollution, can have significant environmental consequences.
