Nitrocellulose lacquer, or NC lacquer, is a solvent-borne coating based on nitrocellulose resin dissolved in volatile organic solvents. It has been widely used as a finish for wood, furniture, and musical instruments, particularly during the early to mid-20th century.

Composition and formulation: The binder is nitrocellulose, often combined with plasticizers to impart flexibility. The solvent system typically includes fast-evaporating components such as acetone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, toluene, and xylene. This combination allows rapid drying and smooth film formation.

Properties: NC lacquer dries quickly, forming a hard, glossy film with good clarity that sands and polishes well. It yields a striking, traditional appearance favored in vintage-style finishes. However, the film can become brittle over time and is prone to cracking if subjected to heavy impact or rapid environmental changes. Aging may lead to yellowing and reduced UV resistance, and its chemical resistance is moderate. Recoating generally requires scuffing and cleaning the surface to ensure good adhesion.

Applications and history: Introduced in the early 20th century, nitrocellulose lacquer became the dominant finish for many consumer wood products, as well as for musical instruments and automotive refinishes, before being largely replaced by polyurethane and water-based systems in the late 20th century. It remains used by some guitar makers and restorers seeking an authentic vintage look and feel.

Safety and environmental considerations: The solvents in NC lacquer are highly flammable and release volatile organic compounds. Proper ventilation, storage away from heat sources, and adherence to safety regulations are important. Waste and finishing materials should be disposed of according to local hazardous-waste guidelines.
