The Nierbekken is a small river located in the western part of Norway, flowing through the municipality of Årdal in Vestland county. The name derives from the old Norse word njar, meaning “narrow”, and bekk, meaning “stream”, reflecting the river’s slender and winding character as it skirts the valley floor.

The source of the Nierbekken lies in a series of alpine lakes in the higher reaches of the Årdalsfjell mountains. From there the stream descends through a series of shallow gorges before traversing a rocky, mixed forest corridor. Its total length is approximately 12 kilometres, and it joins the larger Årdalselva near the village of Årdalstangen. The river’s drainage basin covers an area of roughly 25 square kilometres, and it receives a moderate flow that fluctuates with seasonal runoff and snowmelt.

Ecologically, the Nierbekken supports a temperate rain forest ecosystem, with abundant ferns and spruce along its banks. It is an important spawning ground for several species of salmon, including Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), as well as trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and grayling (Thymallus thymallus). The surrounding riparian habitat provides nesting sites for waterfowl and breeding grounds for amphibians such as the marsh frog (Rana temporaria). Water quality surveys indicate high levels of dissolved oxygen and low turbidity, making the river attractive for biodiversity.

The river has played a modest role in local industry, primarily providing water for small hydroelectric projects on its upper reaches. Historically, the Nierbekken was also used for logging, with log drives moving timber downstream to the main Årdalselva. Today, the Nierbekken is popular for recreational fishing, kayaking, and nature walks, with several marked trails following its course. The local Årdal municipality maintains a conservation plan that focuses on habitat restoration and monitoring of fish populations to sustain both ecological health and recreational use.
