Neuroforskere (Danish/Norwegian for "neuroscientists") are scientists who study the structure, function, development, genetics and pathology of the nervous system. Their work spans molecular and cellular processes in neurons and glia, systems-level organization of brain circuits, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, and clinical research into neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The field is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on biology, psychology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science and mathematics. Common methods include electrophysiology, neuroimaging (MRI, PET), microscopy, molecular biology techniques, computational modeling and behavioral experiments. Advances in tools such as optogenetics, single-cell sequencing and machine learning have expanded research possibilities.

Neuroforskere work in universities, hospitals, research institutes, industry and government. They contribute to understanding brain development, learning and memory, sensory processing, and the biological bases of disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression and autism. Outcomes inform diagnostics, therapeutics, neurotechnology and public health policies.

Training typically involves undergraduate study in a related field followed by graduate doctoral research and often postdoctoral experience. Ethical considerations are prominent, including animal welfare, informed consent in human studies, data privacy and the societal implications of neurotechnology. Collaborative and translational efforts aim to bridge basic science and clinical application while addressing reproducibility and equity in research participation and benefit.
