Neorites is a genus of extinct ammonoid cephalopods known from Triassic marine deposits. The name is derived from neo- (“new”) and a common ammonoid suffix, and the type species is Neorites neoterata, which anchors the genus’s diagnosis.

Fossils attributed to Neorites have been found in Europe and North Africa, with additional fragments reported from the Tethyan region. The stratigraphic range spans from the late Early Triassic to the Middle Triassic (approximately Olenekian to Anisian), indicating a post-extinction recovery interval for ammonoids in some regions.

Shell morphology and diagnosis: Neorites fossils show a moderately evolute to slightly involute shell with a fusiform outline. Ribs range from fine to moderately strong on the early whorls and tend to fade on later growth. Some species exhibit lateral tubercles, and the sutures are ammonitic with shallow to moderate lobes. Ornamentation and shell proportions vary across described species, providing useful biostratigraphic markers.

Taxonomic position and species: The genus is firmly placed within Ammonoidea, but its precise relationship to other Triassic ammonoids remains debated. Some authorities assign Neorites to a Ceratitaceae-related lineage, while others place it within Perisphinctoidea. Described species include Neorites neoterata, Neorites praedift, and Neorites minoris, though the full diversity is likely under revision with new material.

Significance and research: Neorites contributes to understanding Triassic ammonoid diversification and biostratigraphy following the Permian-Triassic extinction. The preserved ornamentation on available specimens aids regional correlations, and ongoing fieldwork alongside reexamination of fragmentary material may refine its geographic range and phylogenetic position.
