Nenäobstruktio refers to a blockage or obstruction in the nasal passage, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors affecting different parts of the nasal anatomy.

Common causes include anatomical issues such as a deviated nasal septum, where the wall between the nostrils is off-center, leading to one side being narrower. Nasal polyps, which are soft, noncancerous growths, can also block airflow. Swelling of the nasal tissues due to allergies, infections like the common cold or sinusitis, or irritants can also lead to temporary obstruction. Enlarged adenoids, particularly in children, are another significant cause. Trauma to the nose can result in structural changes that impede breathing. In some cases, foreign objects lodged in the nasal cavity can cause an obstruction.

Symptoms of nenäobstruktio typically include difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils, snoring, nasal congestion, and mouth breathing. Depending on the underlying cause, other symptoms might include post-nasal drip, facial pain or pressure, and a reduced sense of smell.

Diagnosis often involves a physical examination of the nasal passages, sometimes with the aid of a nasal speculum or endoscope. Imaging studies like CT scans may be used to visualize internal structures and identify polyps or other abnormalities. Treatment depends on the cause. For allergies, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be prescribed. Infections are treated with antibiotics or decongestants. Surgical intervention may be necessary to correct a deviated septum, remove polyps, or address other structural issues. Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding allergens or irritants, can also help manage symptoms.
