Nenänielutulehdus, also known as nasopharyngitis, is an inflammation of the nasal cavity and the pharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose. It is a common condition, frequently caused by viral infections, particularly rhinoviruses, which are responsible for the common cold. Other viruses and sometimes bacteria can also lead to this inflammation.

Symptoms of nenänielutulehdus typically include a runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, sneezing, and sometimes a mild cough or headache. In children, it can also be associated with fever and irritability. The mucus produced may initially be clear and watery, but can thicken and change color over the course of the illness.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. There is no specific cure for viral nasopharyngitis, and treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms. This can include rest, adequate fluid intake, and over-the-counter medications for pain relief and congestion, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Nasal saline sprays can also help to clear nasal passages.

While generally a self-limiting condition that resolves within a week or two, complications can occasionally occur, especially in young children or individuals with weakened immune systems. These may include ear infections or sinus infections. Persistent or severe symptoms, or symptoms that do not improve, warrant medical attention to rule out other causes or secondary bacterial infections.
