negyedéves

Negyedéves is a Hungarian term used primarily in higher education to denote a student in the fourth year of an undergraduate or similar degree program. The word combines negyed, meaning fourth, and év, meaning year, with the suffix -es forming an adjective that can function as a noun (negyedéves hallgató).

In practice, a negyedéves is typically someone who has completed the first three years of study and is finishing the final year requirements. The workload often includes advanced courses, seminars, and a substantial final-year project or bachelor’s thesis. Many students also participate in internships or research placements as part of their final-year obligations.

Program structures influence how the term is used. In some fields, especially five-year or professional programs such as engineering or architecture, negyedéves may refer specifically to the fourth year of a longer course. In other programs, the fourth year is followed by an additional year of study, sometimes labeled ötödéves (fifth year).

The term is most common in university and college contexts and is used in both formal and informal speech to indicate a student’s year-level status. It is less commonly applied outside higher education and generally does not refer to schooling levels outside the university system.
