nefrektómia is the surgical removal of a kidney. This procedure can be performed for a variety of reasons, including kidney cancer, severe kidney damage, or when a kidney is no longer functioning properly. It can also be done to donate a kidney to someone else, a procedure known as a living donor nephrectomy.

There are two main types of nephrectomy: radical and partial. A radical nephrectomy involves the removal of the entire kidney, along with the adrenal gland and surrounding fatty tissue. A partial nephrectomy, on the other hand, removes only the diseased or damaged part of the kidney, leaving the healthy portion intact. This is often preferred when possible to preserve kidney function.

The surgery can be performed using traditional open surgery, which involves a larger incision, or laparoscopically, a minimally invasive technique using small incisions and a camera. Laparoscopic nephrectomy generally leads to a faster recovery time and less pain.

After a nephrectomy, individuals can typically live a normal life with a single functioning kidney. The remaining kidney often enlarges and takes over the work of the removed one. Post-operative care involves pain management, monitoring for complications, and a gradual return to normal activities. Regular check-ups are usually recommended to monitor the health of the remaining kidney.
