A necropolis, plural necropoleis, is a large cemetery or a district of tombs and funerary monuments. The term comes from Greek nekropolis, meaning “city of the dead,” and is used to describe burial spaces associated with ancient cities and regions. Necropoleis could function as distinct zones outside urban centers, or as expansive concentrations of tombs along routes and in ceremonial landscapes.

In classical contexts, necropoleis were typically located beyond the walls of the living city or along major approaches. They often contained a range of tomb types, including family mausolea, rock-cut tombs, chamber tombs, stelae, and monumental monuments. The arrangement and architecture frequently reflected social status, lineage, and religious beliefs, with wealthier families sometimes constructing elaborate tombs and sculptural programs.

Regional variations are evident across the Greco-Roman world. Athens’ Kerameikos is a well-known example of a city necropolis with grave markers and public monuments. Roman necropoleis were commonly situated along roads outside city gates, part of broader suburban burial networks. In Egypt, the term is applied to large-scale cemeteries such as the Giza Necropolis, though local contexts produced distinct monumental traditions, including pyramids and rock-cut tombs.

Archaeologically, necropoleis are valuable for understanding burial practices, social organization, and urban development. Inscriptions, grave goods, and architectural forms provide evidence of identity, status, and ritual behavior, helping historians reconstruct the cultural landscape of past societies.
