Necessaire is a historical term for a compact case or box containing a curated set of small tools and items for a particular purpose. The name comes from the French nécessaire, meaning necessary. In English usage, the word is chiefly encountered in antique contexts and in phrases such as “toilet necessaire” or “sewing necessaire.”

Most commonly, a toiletry necessaire referred to a portable grooming kit used by travelers and households in the 18th and 19th centuries. A typical toiletry necessaire would include shaving implements, brushes, a tooth care kit, a comb, scissors, and sometimes perfume or powders, all arranged in a fitted case often made of silver, tortoiseshell, wood, or leather with compartments and a protective lining.
