Natuurbuffers are areas dominated by natural or semi-natural vegetation and landforms that shield ecosystems, human communities, and infrastructure from environmental disturbances. They act as living barriers between vulnerable spaces and stressors such as floods, erosion, nutrient and sediment runoff, wind, heat, and encroaching development. The term covers a spectrum of landscapes used in land management and conservation.

Common forms include riparian buffers along rivers and streams, coastal buffers of mangroves or dunes, forest buffers surrounding settlements or farms, and hedgerows or windbreak strips in agricultural land. Wetlands and created wetlands can also function as natuurbuffers by absorbing floodwaters and filtering pollutants.

Natuurbuffers provide a range of ecosystem services. They improve water quality by trapping sediments and absorbing nutrients; reduce flood peaks and soil erosion; moderate microclimates and provide shade and cooling; support biodiversity by offering habitat and corridors for wildlife; and contribute to carbon storage and recreation.

Design and management considerations include determining appropriate width, selecting native and climate-adapted species, maintaining vegetation structure, and ensuring connectivity with surrounding habitats. Effectiveness depends on land-use context, hydrology, species composition, and ongoing maintenance to manage invasive plants and human pressures.

In policy and planning, natuurbuffers are integrated in watershed management, sustainable agriculture schemes, coastal protection plans, and urban green infrastructure programs. While beneficial, their performance varies with scale and climate, and they require long-term stewardship and stakeholder cooperation to balance ecological goals with land-use needs.
