NATOs, a rarely used plural form for NATO, refers to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, an intergovernmental military alliance established in 1949 under the North Atlantic Treaty. The alliance is designed to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political consultation and collective defense if attacked.

NATO began with twelve founding members in Washington, D.C. It has expanded to 32 member states, reflecting shifts in security after the Cold War. Notable enlargements include Finland in 2023 and Sweden in 2024.

The alliance is governed by the North Atlantic Council, with the Secretary General serving as chair. Decisions are made by consensus. The integrated military structure includes Allied Command Operations and Allied Command Transformation, supported by senior commanders such as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. NATO also maintains a network of partnerships and cooperative frameworks with non-member countries.

NATO conducts collective defense under Article 5, crisis management, and cooperative security. It runs training and exercises to improve interoperability and maintains a deterrence posture through conventional forces and, where agreed among members, nuclear capabilities. In addition to its core missions, NATO pursues partnerships through programs such as the Partnership for Peace and various Euro-Atlantic collaborations.

Funding for NATOs is voluntary, with members determining their own defense budgets. The alliance has encouraged meeting a guideline of approximately 2% of GDP on defense and dedicating a portion of spending to major equipment, though national conditions vary among members.

NATOs face ongoing security challenges, including cyber threats, hybrid warfare, and regional instability. The alliance seeks to adapt by modernizing forces, strengthening deterrence, and promoting political cohesion and burden-sharing among its members.
