Napthenic is an adjective referring to naphthenes, cycloalkane hydrocarbons with one or more saturated ring structures. In petroleum chemistry, the term napthenic commonly describes a class of carboxylic acids derived from these cycloaliphatic frameworks, known as napthenic acids. These acids are typically found as a complex mixture in crude oils and bitumen, especially in heavier fractions.

Napthenic acids are carboxylic acids with cycloaliphatic ring systems, which can be monocyclic or polycyclic and may bear various alkyl substituents. They are non-aromatic and often have a broad distribution of carbon numbers. The napthenic acid fraction is chemically defined by its acidity, rather than precise molecular structure, and many individual constituents share similar ring-backed carboxylate units.

Occurrence and significance in industry are tied to crude oil composition. Napthenic acids are more prevalent in heavier crude oils and in residual fractions. Their presence is commonly assessed by measuring the total acid number (TAN), a parameter used to gauge corrosivity and processing challenges. The acids can be concentrated during processing and may contribute to metal corrosion, particularly at elevated temperatures and in the presence of sulfur compounds.

Management in refining includes removal or stabilization of napthenic acids through hydrotreating, caustic washing, or controlled processing conditions to reduce TAN. The acidity of napthenic acids influences corrosion risk, catalyst performance, and the design of refinery equipment. Understanding the napthenic content of a crude oil helps predict processing behavior and informs corrosion mitigation strategies.
