The fundamental principle behind a napkollektor is the absorption of sunlight by a dark surface, often a metal plate coated with a selective coating that maximizes absorption and minimizes re-emission of heat. This heated surface then transfers its energy to a fluid, usually water or a mixture of water and antifreeze, circulating through pipes attached to or behind the absorber plate.

Evacuated tube collectors are another type, featuring glass tubes from which air has been removed to create a vacuum.
