They encompass engineered assemblies of nanoparticles, nanorods, nanotubes, quantum dots, and molecular machines, as well as complex biomolecular constructs such as DNA-based devices. Nanosystems are studied for their unique properties that arise from high surface area and quantum effects, which can enable new functions not available at larger scales.

Design and fabrication of nanosystems use bottom-up approaches, assembling molecules or nanoparticles into functional structures, and top-down methods that pattern materials at the nanometer scale. Hybrid strategies combine both. Key considerations include controllable synthesis, precise structure, surface functionalization, and reproducible performance under working conditions.

Properties of nanosystems are governed by size and surface phenomena. High surface area-to-volume ratios, quantum confinement, and stochastic fluctuations at the nanoscale influence optical, electronic, catalytic, and mechanical behavior. Interactions with the environment and surrounding media often dominate performance, necessitating careful passivation and stability design.

Applications span medicine, electronics, energy, materials, and sensing. In medicine, nanosystems enable targeted drug delivery, imaging, and diagnostics. In electronics and photonics, they enable high-density data storage and nanoscale sensors. In energy, nanosystems improve catalysts, batteries, and solar cells.

Challenges include scalable manufacturing, batch-to-batch reproducibility, long-term stability, and integration with existing technologies. Safety and environmental impact, biocompatibility, toxicity, and lifecycle assessment require careful evaluation. Regulatory and ethical considerations continue to shape research, funding, and deployment.

Characterization relies on electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy, and scattering techniques to resolve structure, composition, and function at the nanoscale. The field is interdisciplinary, combining chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering to design, fabricate, and test nanosystems.
