nanoSIMet

nanoSIMet is a nanoscale subscriber identity module concept and product family intended for ultra-compact devices. It provides secure storage of subscriber identity data and enables network authentication without a conventional SIM card, aiming to combine the security of SIM technology with a much smaller form factor.

Design and interfaces: The nanoSIMet element is embedded as a thin, flexible secure element. It supports both contact-based and contactless interfaces, enabling integration into wearables, medical devices, tiny IoT sensors, and automotive components. It stores operator profiles and cryptographic keys, and performs network authentication. Provisioning can be performed over the air via encrypted channels, and multiple operator profiles can be managed within a single nanoSIMet instance.

Security and architecture: It employs a tamper-resistant secure element and hardware-backed key storage. It supports secure OTA provisioning, mutual authentication with mobile networks, and strict profile isolation to prevent cross-profile data leakage. The specification envisions interoperability with existing SIM and eSIM provisioning workflows through translation or bridging layers to ease integration in devices with mixed capabilities.

History and standards: The term and concept emerged in the 2020s amid the broader evolution of SIM technologies. A standards effort, led by the NanoSIMet Alliance, published initial specifications describing form factors, interoperability rules, and security requirements. Pilot deployments have occurred in select IoT and wearable applications, with broader industry testing ongoing.

Impact and adoption: nanoSIMet targets space- and power-constrained devices where traditional SIM options are impractical, offering smaller footprints and potential manufacturing simplifications. Adoption depends on device hardware support, operator willingness to participate in profile management, and the maturity of provisioning workflows across ecosystems.
