Nachtschadeplanten, commonly referred to in English as nightshade plants, belong to the plant family Solanaceae. The family includes about 98 genera and more than 2,700 species, many of which are significant in agriculture, medicine, and horticulture. The genus Solanum is the most diverse, containing economically important crops such as Solanum lycopersicum (tomato), Solanum tuberosum (potato), Solanum melongena (eggplant), and Solanum nigrum (black nightshade). The genera Capsicum, with species like Capsicum annuum (bell pepper) and Capsicum chinense (habanero), and the genus Lycopersicon, formerly separate, are also part of the nightshade group.

Nightshade plants are generally herbaceous perennials or annuals with alternate, often simple leaves and characteristic flower structures. Their flowers typically have five petals, while the fruit can be a berry, capsule, or a nut, depending on the species. Many species produce alkaloids such as solanine, chaconine, and tomatine, which confer both defense against herbivores and potential toxicity to humans. While toxic in large amounts, certain alkaloids have pharmacological uses; for example, atropine derived from Atropa belladonna and digoxin from digitalis species are critical in modern medicine.

Cultivation practices for edible nightshades emphasize control of pests that target the same alkaloid pathways, careful harvesting to avoid consumption of immature, high-toxin fruits, and soil management to reduce pathogen pressure. Nightshade plants thrive in well-drained soils with ample sun exposure, though tolerance to drought and heat varies among species. Conservation of wild nightshade species and biodiversity remains a topic of interest amid changing climate and agricultural demands.
