Mürasummutussüsteem, also known as noise cancellation system, is a technology designed to reduce or eliminate unwanted sound. This is achieved through a process called active noise cancellation (ANC). ANC systems work by generating an opposing sound wave, known as an anti-noise wave, to cancel out the original noise. Microphones are used to detect ambient sound, and then an electronic circuit creates the anti-noise wave, which is then played through speakers. This anti-noise wave has the same amplitude as the original noise but is 180 degrees out of phase, resulting in destructive interference and a significant reduction in perceived noise.

There are different types of ANC systems. Feedforward ANC uses a microphone placed on the outside of the headphone or device to detect noise before it reaches the ear. Feedback ANC uses a microphone inside the ear cup to monitor the sound that the listener actually hears and then adjusts the anti-noise accordingly. A combination of both feedforward and feedback is known as hybrid ANC, which generally offers the most effective noise reduction across a wider range of frequencies.
