The choice of system affects gloss level, depth of color, drying time, and durability. Film-forming coatings offer greater abrasion and moisture resistance but may require longer cure times and ventilation during application.

Durability and maintenance depend on finish type and use. Damaged areas can be repaired by light sanding and re-coating. Cleaning recommendations vary but generally avoid harsh solvents on delicate finishes. Environmental considerations favor low-VOC, water-based options for indoor furniture.

Historically, furniture finishes evolved from natural oils and waxes to shellac, alkyd varnishes, and modern polyurethane and UV-curable coatings. Trends emphasize eco-friendliness, fast curing, and compatibility with various woods, with finish selection guided by use, appearance, cost, and maintenance requirements.
