Möbelfinish refers to the surface treatments applied to furniture to protect wood, enhance its appearance, and determine feel and tactile quality.

Finishes can be broadly categorized as penetrative oils and waxes, film-forming varnishes and lacquers, shellac, and modern synthetic coatings. Each type produces a distinct appearance, ranging from natural, matte to high-gloss, and offers varying levels of protection against moisture, wear, and UV light.

Penetrating oils such as linseed or tung oil soak into the wood, emphasizing grain and warmth but offering limited surface protection. Waxes provide a soft sheen and easy rework but minimal moisture resistance. Shellac yields a smooth film with warm color but is sensitive to alcohol. Varnishes and polyurethane (oil- or water-based) form hard, protective films; lacquers cure to hard films with rapid drying. UV-curable and water-based coatings reduce solvent content and are common in modern production.

Application methods include brushing, wiping, and spraying, often in multiple coats with light sanding between coats. The choice of system affects gloss level, depth of color, drying time, and durability. Film-forming coatings offer greater abrasion and moisture resistance but may require longer cure times and ventilation during application.

Durability and maintenance depend on finish type and use. Damaged areas can be repaired by light sanding and re-coating. Cleaning recommendations vary but generally avoid harsh solvents on delicate finishes. Environmental considerations favor low-VOC, water-based options for indoor furniture.

Historically, furniture finishes evolved from natural oils and waxes to shellac, alkyd varnishes, and modern polyurethane and UV-curable coatings. Trends emphasize eco-friendliness, fast curing, and compatibility with various woods, with finish selection guided by use, appearance, cost, and maintenance requirements.
