Mythologisation is the process by which individuals, events, or ideas become subjects of myths, often over time. It involves the transformation of historical or factual occurrences into legendary or archetypal narratives. This process can occur consciously, as a deliberate effort to create a national identity or venerate a figure, or unconsciously, as a natural evolution of collective memory and storytelling. Mythologisation often imbues the subject with symbolic meaning, exaggerating certain qualities and simplifying complexities to create a more resonant and enduring tale.

The transformed subject, now part of a myth, typically serves a cultural function. It can explain natural phenomena, provide moral guidance, establish social norms, or reinforce group identity. The characters and events within a myth often embody universal human experiences and aspirations, making them relatable across generations. For example, the mythologisation of a founding father might highlight his wisdom and bravery, overshadowing any personal flaws or political missteps, to create an inspiring national hero.
