Musketeers were infantry soldiers whose primary weapon was the musket, a smoothbore, long gun loaded at the muzzle and fired with a handheld ignition source. The term, from the French mousquetaire, was used for much of the early modern period in European armies. Musketeers were typical of line infantry from the 16th through the 18th centuries, operating in formations that fired coordinated volleys and advanced with bayonets fixed.

Development: The transition from arquebus to musket occurred by the 16th century; early muskets used matchlock mechanisms; later flintlock became standard. The bayonet developed in the 17th century, allowing muskets to function as hand-to-hand weapons. In practice, musketeers often fought alongside pikemen until pikes were phased out.

In France, the Musketeers of the Guard (Mousquetaires du Roi) were the royal household's elite infantry unit, typically recruited from noble volunteers. They served as bodyguards and as part of the King's military entourage, and their distinctive uniforms and prestige helped make the term musketeer iconic. The group gave its name to numerous literary works and popular culture.

Cultural impact: The best-known representation is The Three Musketeers, a 19th-century novel by Alexandre Dumas that follows D’Artagnan and three fellow musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—though the characters are a blend of historical and fictional elements. Subsequent adaptations have reinforced the association between musketeers and swashbuckling but historically, they were soldiers who played a key role in early modern infantry tactics.

Decline and legacy: With advances in firearms and military organization, the specialized Musketeers as a distinct corps faded by the 19th century, though the term endures in literature and in ceremonial units in some countries.
