Musikteori is the study of the structure and organization of music. It examines how sounds are organized in time and pitch, how melodies and harmonies are built, and how musical works are put together. The field includes the study of notation, scales, intervals, chords, rhythms, form, and tonal systems, as well as non-tonal and contemporary approaches.

Key concepts include pitch and melody; harmony and chord progressions; rhythm, meter, tempo; timbre and texture; and form. Scales and modes define the available pitches, with intervals describing the distance between notes. Harmony analyzes how chords function in relation to a key or mode, while voice leading and counterpoint study the movement of multiple voices. Notation encodes these ideas on sheet music, using staff notation, key signatures, time signatures, and accidentals; chord symbols and figured bass are used in practical contexts.

Musikteori has roots in ancient and medieval theory, with works by Pythagoras, Boethius, and later treatises shaping Western theory. The Renaissance and Baroque saw growth of counterpoint and tonality, culminating in the Common Practice period in classical harmony. The 20th century expanded theory to analyze atonality, serialism, polytonality, and electronic music, while various traditions include modal, folk, and ethnomusicological theory. Methods include analytic approaches (form/functional harmony), formal schemas, set theory, Schenkerian analysis, and computational analyses.

In education and composition, musikteori provides tools for understanding and creating music. It informs performance decisions, arrangement, and musicology research. Practical study often proceeds through courses, textbooks, ear training, and exercises in identifying intervals, chords, and progressions, as well as composing short pieces to apply concepts. Modern theory commonly uses notation software and analysis software.
