Muotoiltupassiivi is a term used in surface engineering to describe an engineered chemical formulation designed to passivate metal surfaces by forming a protective, adherent film. The concept combines muotoiltu (formulated) and passiivi (passive), reflecting its purpose to create a controlled passive layer rather than relying on native oxide alone. Formulations are prepared as formulated solutions or suspensions containing active passivating species, stabilizers, and surfactants. The exact composition is typically proprietary but common components include metal-inhibiting ions, inorganic phosphates or nitrates, organic acids or amines, and corrosion inhibitors; pH and temperature are tightly controlled to optimize film formation.

Application is performed by cleaning the metal surface, applying the formulation (immersion, spray, or wipe), and allowing a dwell time for film formation. The resulting layer minimizes active sites for electrochemical attack and improves corrosion resistance, especially for stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and copper-based materials.
