Passivation is a chemical or electrochemical treatment of a material surface that enhances corrosion resistance by forming a thin, adherent, protective film. The film is typically an oxide or other compound that is more chemically stable than the base material and impedes the diffusion of aggressive species such as water, oxygen, or chloride ions.

In metals, passivation often involves creating a chromium-rich oxide layer. For stainless steels, chemical treatments remove free iron from the surface and promote a protective Cr2O3 layer, which reduces corrosion in aggressive environments. Common procedures include immersion in oxidizing acids such as nitric acid or using greener alternatives like citric acid, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Some alloys form protective films spontaneously on exposure to air, while others may require anodic or chemical treatments to enhance film quality.

Different materials form distinct passive films. Aluminum and titanium rapidly form native oxide films (Al2O3 and TiO2) that protect the metal; these films can be thickened or sealed through additional processes such as anodizing. In semiconductor and electronic contexts, passivation refers to the deposition of a protective insulating layer (typically silicon dioxide or silicon nitride) on a device surface to reduce surface states, contamination, and recombination, thereby improving performance and reliability.

Applications commonly include stainless steel equipment and piping, medical implants, automotive and aerospace components, and microelectronic devices. Limitations of passivation include damage or dissolution of the film by abrasion, aggressive chemicals, or high temperatures; periodic re-passivation or protective coatings may be required to maintain long-term performance.
