Its most distinctive feature is its luminescent markings, which glow with a soft, greenish light, aiding its navigation in the absolute darkness of its underground environment. These markings are believed to be bioluminescent bacteria living symbiotically within its skin.

The diet of the munkidkereteket consists primarily of cave-dwelling insects and fungi, which it locates using a keen sense of smell and sensitive whiskers.
