Mullhaltiga refers to soils or soil horizons characterized by mull-type humus, a form of organic matter that develops under conditions of active microbial decomposition and integration of organic material into the mineral soil. The term is used in Nordic soil science to describe humus that is well-mixed with the underlying mineral horizon and supports rapid nutrient cycling, typically in deciduous forest environments.

Formation and characteristics: Mullhaltiga soils form where litter from deciduous vegetation decomposes quickly, aided by soil fauna such as earthworms and microarthropods. They exhibit a loose, granular to crumbly structure in the surface horizons, with high biological activity and substantial mixing of organic matter with mineral particles. The humus is usually rich in nutrients and capable of releasing them readily to plants. The pH is generally neutral to moderately acidic, and base saturation tends to be relatively high compared with more acidic humus forms.

Soil properties and horizons: In profiles, mullhumus contributes to a pronounced A horizon with active root activity and a near-total breakdown of litter. The boundary between organic-rich topsoil and the mineral subsoil is often well defined, reflecting the continual incorporation of organic material into the mineral layer.

Distribution and significance: Mullhaltiga soils are common in temperate deciduous forests across Northern Europe and parts of North America. They are typically fertile, supporting diverse plant communities and productive agriculture when properly managed. They are contrasted with mor and moder humus forms, which form under different moisture and vegetation regimes.
