Mucus is a viscous secretion produced by the mucous membranes of many animals, including humans. The term mucuss is a nonstandard spelling; the conventional noun is mucus, while mucous is commonly used as an adjective (as in mucous membranes).

Composition varies, but mucus generally consists of water, mucins (glycoproteins), salts, enzymes, antibodies such as secretory IgA, and lipids. It is produced by goblet cells and specialized glands in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and other mucous membranes.

Its primary roles are protection, lubrication, and defense. Mucus traps dust, microbes, and particulates, and is moved by cilia in a process called mucociliary clearance. In the respiratory tract, this transport helps keep airways clear. In the gastrointestinal tract, mucus protects the lining from mechanical and chemical damage and facilitates the passage of contents. In reproductive and other tracts, mucus contributes to lubrication and barrier function.

Production increases during irritation, infection, or inflammation, which can lead to congestion or a runny nose. Dehydration or dry environments can thicken mucus and hinder clearance. Chronic disorders such as cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, or allergic rhinitis can involve abnormally thick or excessive mucus.

Management depends on the context and may include hydration, humidification, nasal saline irrigation, and, when appropriate, mucolytic medicines such as guaifenesin or hypertonic saline. Treating underlying infection or allergy is also important.
