Motort is not a standard term in English; in many contexts it is simply a misspelling of motor or a language-specific form of the word for an engine. In this article, motort is treated as synonymous with motor, a device that converts energy into mechanical motion.

A motor converts energy into mechanical work. The energy source may be electricity, which powers electric motors; or chemical energy in internal combustion engines; or pressurized fluids in hydraulic or pneumatic motors. Electric motors are common in industry and households, and include categories such as DC motors (with or without brushes), AC induction motors, and synchronous motors as well as brushless DC motors and servo motors.

Common motor types and characteristics include that induction motors are robust and widely used in fixed-speed applications; synchronous motors provide precise speed under constant load; DC motors offer good torque at low speed; servo and stepper motors enable precise position control in robotics. Hydraulic and pneumatic motors use incompressible or compressible fluids to produce rotary or linear motion; piezoelectric and ultrasonic motors are used for small, high-precision tasks.

Performance metrics include torque, speed, power, efficiency, and thermal performance. Control methods include variable frequency drives, PWM, feedback sensors, encoders, and automatic control loops. Efficiency classes and standards (for example, IEC) guide design and labeling; cooling and lubrication are important for longevity.

Motors power most modern machinery, from fans and pumps to vehicles and industrial robots. The development of electric motors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries enabled widespread electrification. Today, motor technology emphasizes higher efficiency, reduced losses, power density, and advanced control for automation.
