A motion controller is a device or subsystem that manages motion of mechanical systems by generating precise commands to actuators such as motors and by measuring feedback from sensors to achieve specified position, velocity, or torque profiles. In industrial contexts, motion controllers coordinate multiple axes for automated production equipment, CNC machines, robotics, and other automated systems. In consumer electronics, the term can also refer to input devices that capture and relay human motion to computers or gaming systems.

Industrial motion controllers typically integrate a processor, motor drivers, and feedback interfaces such as encoders or resolvers, along with interpolation algorithms to execute planned trajectories. They may operate as standalone units or as part of a programmable logic controller (PLC) network, using protocols such as EtherCAT, CANopen, Modbus, or Ethernet. They implement control loops such as PID, with capabilities for feedforward, torque control, and multi-axis synchronization.

Consumer motion controllers, for gaming or virtual reality, rely on inertial sensors or optical tracking to determine motion and translate it into input signals for consoles or PCs. These devices may use accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, and provide wireless or wired connectivity. They are designed for low latency and robust tracking rather than industrial precision.

Common applications include CNC milling and turning, robotic arms, packaging and material handling, 3D printing, machine tooling, motion simulation, and camera rigs for film and broadcast. The field emphasizes real-time performance, reliability, and safety considerations such as limit switches and safe torque areas.
